Job Description

Under limited supervision of the Nursing Manager (Medical Oncology) and medical direction from the physician, provides professional patient care by assisting the physician with the assessment, examination and treatment of clinic patients following established standards and practices. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence and the philosophy and mission of the June E. Nylen Cancer Center (JENCC) in all aspects of job performance.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Complies with established nursing standards and routines when rendering treatment and administering prescribed medications and injections.

2) Maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment for patients and personnel.

3) Performs routine patient care tasks as follows:

· Reviews schedule and set up for appointments.
· Requisitions or pulls medical records from file for the day's schedule if patient has previous records.
· Receives patients and assists them to exam room.
· Initiates record forms and obtains required signatures, consents and releases. Takes history when desired by physician.
· Prepares and assesses patients for the physicians by taking and recording patients weight, TPR, BP and other pertinent information.
· Assists physicians with examinations and treatments; provides medications, supplies and equipment as needed.
· Explains procedures and provides support and reassurance.
· Requisitions ordered diagnostic and therapeutic services and transports or escorts patients to respective departments.
· Discharges patients with physician's instructions and prescriptions.
· Completes patient's EMR and documents entries in an accurate and efficient manner.
· Reviews, admixes, prepares and administers chemotherapy utilizing ONS standards of administration.
· Reviews outside labs, radiology and other documents for routing of priority of provider review.

4) Inventories orders, replenishes stock and utilizes medical supplies in a cost-effective manner.

5) Cleans, sterilizes and maintains all necessary medical equipment and instruments.

6) Strips and cleans tables and work areas after each patient use; disposes of soiled linens and waste.

7) Triages patients care calls, charts conversation and informs physician. Responds to patient inquiries and coordinates hospital orders, scheduling of tests and prescription refills.

8) Demonstrates ability to assume charge position and/or a leadership role in an emergency/crisis situation.

9) Administers IVs, and defibrillates patients as directed by the physician.

10) Advises and instructs patients on a variety of health care issues.

11) Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.

12) Consults with and keeps supervisor informed of activities, needs and problems.

13) Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations.

14) Attends and participates in required meetings, inservices and educational programs.

15) May be requested to formally conduct staff inservices regarding patient care protocol.

16) Is knowledgeable of and complies with office-wide departmental Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.

17) Acts as a resource to satellite clinics; assists provider in scheduling tests and procedures in coordination with satellite regulations. Travels in conjunction with provider to conduct professional care of patients outside of June E. Nylen Cancer Center in compliance with all standards set forth while practicing here at the Cancer Center.

18) Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SERVICE EXCELLENCE:

1) Incorporates the philosophy, mission and vision of the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in internal relationships and all guests served.

2) Initiates contact with all guests served (i.e., telephone etiquette, eye contact, speaking first and last, etc.).

3) Assists guests that are waiting (i.e., checks back and gives a realistic time frame, makes guests comfortable).

4) Eliminates use of "killer communication" (i.e., any behavior that interferes with effective communication).

5) Utilizes the five-step process for dealing with difficult situations.

6) Is supportive and respectful of patients and demonstrates good listening skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

2) Must have a current, valid Registered Nurse license in the state of Iowa.

3) Obtain and maintain CPR and Mandatory Reporter Certification.

4) Clinical experience in acute care setting or equivalent experience strongly preferred (additional experience in oncology beneficial).

5) Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1) Must successfully pass pre-employment physical examination.

2) Requires full range of body motion to assist or occasionally lift patients utilizing proper body mechanics with or without assistance up to 80 pounds independently.

2) Requires frequent standing and walking for extensive periods of time.

3) Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, internal and external, which may affect the work place, such as infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, dust, noise, physical injury from an out of control patient and adverse effects of inclement weather which may occur.
